Dr. Ellison McNutt

CU School of Medicine and CSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

I am an Assistant Professor jointly appointed in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and as basic science faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (Fort Collins Campus). I am a functional morphologist and comparative anatomist. I received my PhD in biological anthropology from Dartmouth College in 2019. My fieldwork primarily takes place in South and Eastern Africa.

Research Interest

I am interested in applying functional morphology and biomechanics to try and answer questions about human evolution. My broad interest is in understanding the evolution of bipedal locomotion and the effect of forces on bone development.

My dissertation work and continued research focus is on identifying and quantifying the presence of plantigrady (i.e. heel-striking) in Miocene hominoids as an important precursor to upright, striding bipedalism.
